A Wae Rebo trip is one of the most unforgettable experiences you can have when visiting Flores, Indonesia. Known as the “village above the clouds,” Wae Rebo is a UNESCO award-winning traditional village located in the mountains of Manggarai, about 1,100 meters above sea level. This hidden gem is famous for its unique cone-shaped houses called Mbaru Niang, stunning panoramic views, and warm hospitality from the local community. For travelers seeking authentic cultural encounters and breathtaking nature, a trip to Wae Rebo is a must.

Why Choose a Wae Rebo Trip?

Unlike other popular tourist destinations, Wae Rebo offers a deep connection to tradition and nature. A Wae Rebo village tour allows you to witness the lifestyle of the Manggarai people, who have preserved their culture for generations. The trip is not just about sightseeing—it’s about experiencing harmony between people and nature.

The Journey to Wae Rebo

From Denge village, you begin a 2–3 hour trek through lush rainforests, bamboo groves, and mountain paths. The trek itself is part of the adventure, offering stunning views and fresh air before you finally arrive at the mystical village that often appears surrounded by misty clouds.

What to Expect in Wae Rebo

During your Wae Rebo trip, you’ll be welcomed with a traditional ceremony called Waelu’u, a sign of respect and gratitude to the ancestors. You’ll stay in one of the traditional Mbaru Niang houses, sharing the space with local families. The experience is simple yet authentic, with meals prepared from organic local ingredients, fresh mountain air, and the calming atmosphere of the village.

At night, the sky above Wae Rebo is filled with stars, offering an unforgettable stargazing experience. In the morning, you can explore the surrounding hills, take photos of the iconic houses, and interact with villagers who are always eager to share their stories.
